THE GREAT BRONZES OF THE BAPTISTRY AT THE BARGELLO NATIONAL MUSEUM IN FLORENCE
From April 16th until September 7th, 2008 the Bargello National Museum of Florence will host the exhibition: The Great Bronzes of the Baptistry. The art of Vincenzo Danti, Michelangelo's disciple.
The Bargello National Museum has organised the first retrospective show devoted to the sculptor Vincenzo Danti (Perugia 1530-1576). It has taken its cue from the restoration of the three large bronze figures from the Florence Baptistery, which portray the Beheading of John the Baptist and are the sculptor's masterpiece.
The majority of the works that he executed for Cosimo I are now conserved in the Bargello National Museum, which is hence the ideal place in which to focus the attention of the public on this extraordinary sixteenth-century sculptor, who was particularly attentive to the teachings of Michelangelo. Despite the fact that Danti was neither a pupil nor a direct collaborator of Buonarroti, he was nevertheless among his most important and original followers. His relation with Michelangelo - of whom he can be considered an ideal "disciple" - is in fact based on his free election of the master's works as models: studying them at length and closely, he evolved a profound sharing not only of the formal ideals but also of the technique and working method.
